Student Symphony Orchestra of the Sankt Petersburger State Conservatory
The basis of the student symphony orchestra of St. Petersburg conservatory was founded by its founder and first director A.G. Rubinstein, who had opened the orchestral and ensemble classes since the founding of the oldest Conservatory of Russia.
In different years the student orchestra was directed by N. Rimskij-Korsakow and A. Glasunow.
Creative cooperation between the student conductor and the orchestra began with the foundation of the Faculty of Conduct.
On the conductor`s stand were at different times interns like
E. Mrawinskij, I. Musin, N.
Rabinowitsch, J. Temirkanow, W. Gergijew and many other. Today the student symphony orchestra remains a school for conducting and orchestral practice, it conducts active concert actions under the direction of the rector of the Conservatory Aleksey Wasiljew. Aleksey Wasiljew – Rector of the Sankt Petersburger State Conservatory N.A. Rimskij-Korsakow, Professor of the Chair of Violoncello, Harp, Double Bass and Quartet Aleksey Wasiljew graduated from Sankt Petersburg State Conservatory N.A. Rimskij-Korsakow majoring in violoncello at the Folk`s Artist of Russia, Professor A.P. Nikitin in 1995. He successfully combined his studies at the conservatory with the violoncello group of Russia`s collective of the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Yuri Temirkanov and from 2004 to 2005 he was concertmaster of the violoncello group. Wasiljew teaches violoncello class at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, at the Conservatory of Music Conservatory and the St. Petersburg Music School named N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov. From 2006 to 2015 he headed the St. Petersburg Music School N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov. In 2015 he was appointed rector of St. Petersburg State Conservatory. Aleksej Wasiljew gives concerts as a conductor, solist and participant of various instrumental ensembles, regularly organizes workshops for violoncello in Russia and abroad and is a jury member of numerous music competitions. The Webern Chamber Philharmony is made up of musicians of Webern Symphony orchestra which is the orchestra of the university for music and performing arts and which is almost as old as the institution itself. Since its foundation in 1812, the typical Viennese music and sound style has been cultivated here.
The orchestra played under guest conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Pierre Boulez, Franz Welser-Möst, Sir Colin Davis, Bertrand de Billy, Ralf Weikert, Claudio Abbado, Mstislav Rostropovich, Zubin Metha and many more. The graduates, so the former members of this orchestra, decisivly shape the sound culture of international musical life: they commit in the most important orchestras worldwide.
