Concert by Shmuel Barzilai, Chief Cantor of the Vienna Jewish Community
On October 13 at 7 pm., the New Synagogue of Kaliningrad will host a concert featuring Shmuel Barzilai, Chief Cantor of the Vienna Jewish Community, accompanied by the Kaliningrad Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Honored Artist of Russia Arkady Feldman. The program includes synagogue chants and Jewish songs. The concert marks the 130th anniversary of the consecration of the New Synagogue of Königsberg, which was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938 and rebuilt in Kaliningrad in 2018.
The musical traditions of Vienna and Königsberg share historical ties: the renowned Viennese cantor and educator Samuel Sulzer taught the distinguished Königsberg cantors Grisha Weintraub and Eduard Birnbaum. Shmuel Barzilai previously performed in Kaliningrad to great acclaim in 2009.
The concert is held with the support of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Moscow, the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Community of Kaliningrad and the Beit Chabad Kaliningrad Jewish Cultural Center, led by Rabbi Avraham Boruch Deutsch, an emissary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
